Tata Nexon EV 2024:
The Tata Nexon EV has been in the market for a considerable time, and we have personally tested it for around 500km. Based on our experience, we would like to share our honest opinion regarding its performance, range, and comfort. We hope that our review will assist you in deciding if it is a wise purchase for you.
Nexon EV 2024: Design –
In terms of design, everyone would agree with me when I say it looks astonishing. Although the previous version of Nexon EV looks great as well, the 2024 version is something next level. You get a lot of color options but my personal favorite is the white one. It has a great road presence, even during the night the color looks amazing. Again this can be a subjective choice.
The Front Design looks muscular and it has a great light setup, which we are going to talk about in the next section. You get 2 parking sensors at the front along with a camera which is part of a 360 camera throughout the body. The size of the front grill is also reduced as an EV doesn’t require as much air as your normal vehicle.
On the sides, you’d get a pretty large ORVM which has an LED turn indicator and a camera rimmed into it. The turn indicators on the ORVM are just blinkers (no sequencing here). ORVMs are there in a piano black finish for every color you choose. You get body-colored door handles with a request sensor only on the driver’s side. You get a sporty-looking allow wheel of size 215-60/ R16.
360 body cladding which comes in black for every color in Nexon EV 2024 is of plastic and feels like a little bit cheaper quality. The vehicle that we tested was driven about 1000km before coming to us and the shine on it had started fading, which I feel one would not expect from their car. It should feel new for at least 5000km if maintained properly.
On the rear side, you get all LED setups for the lights. As for amenities, you get a shark fin antenna, a washer, a defogger, a hidden wiper, and a decent-sized sunroof. There’s a reverse parking camera with only 2 parking sensors. Most of you would think all cars now come with 4 parking sensors at the rear but trust me the camera and these 2 sensors will do their job pretty well.
Nexon EV 2024: Lights –
You get connected DRLs and sequential turn indicators which provide a sporty look to the vehicle. The DRLs come with a welcome and goodbye sequence. Your Nexon EV is going to welcome you with a smile as soon as you hit that unlock button. Also, it has a sequence for goodbye (when you lock the car) and when you put the vehicle on charging. This works with both front and rear lights.
You get headlamps and foglamps all in LED which performs decent enough during the night as well. The fog lamps on Nexon EV come with a cornering function. The Auto Headlamp feature is also a cherry on the cake. At the rear side, you get the same setup as the front, connected tail lamps, sequential turn indicators, and reverse parking light all in LED. So, in my opinion, the lights on the Nexon EV work pretty well.
Nexon EV 2024: Space & Comfort –
You get plenty of space in the Nexon EV. First off, Indians do care about the luggage storage space a lot. Here, you’ll get a 350L of boot space which is sufficient enough for 2-3 large bags and some small bags. Anyway, it’s an EV so generally you’d not be going off on a long trip but if you do plan for a trip with the family you will have sufficient boot space. You also get a boot lamp and a 60-40 split seat option.
If you’re planning for a family trip with Nexon EV, then you’ve got plenty of room on the back row. But if the driver is about 6ft and the front seats are adjusted as per their convenience, then it would be a little difficult for a 6ft person to sit on the back row. You don’t get scooped out seats which creates a problem as your knees are always touching the seat ahead.
Also, leg room is a little less. You do get an armrest in between with two cup holders. There is no headrest for the third passenger which I guess is not required because three people in the back seat is a bit uncomfortable. You can have two average-built adults and a child in the rear seat comfortably. There is no cabin light for the rear passengers. You do get two rear AC vents and a Type-C port for charging your phone.
However, the front row’s story is completely different. It feels very comfortable and premium to be seated on the front row. So if you’re planning to buy this as a daily commute, then it could be your go-to car. Let’s start by talking about the sunroof. You get a decent-sized sunroof plenty enough for the first-row passengers. The seats are very comfortable.
Although, if it were ventilated then it would have been great. The D-cut steering feels very premium because of the color choice and leather used for wrapping. The illuminating Tata logo is the cherry on the cake. However, that logo area is glass so it is a fingerprint magnet and it doesn’t work as a horn. So to honk you’d feel a bit different but with time you’ll get used to it.
We’ll discuss other features in the coming sections for infotainment and drive quality.
Nexon EV 2024: Camera –
The camera quality in the Nexon EV is top-notch. I am completely satisfied with the camera quality and would like to praise Tata for using best in class camera. The quality of the display also contributes to the camera display which again is the best in class. Even in low light scenarios, the camera works pretty well and the display is well equipped to support the HD resolution camera.
Nexon EV 2024: Infotainment –
Infotainment of the new Nexon EV is feature-loaded. There are lots of features in the infotainment system alone. Apart from the basic features, there is a lot more to do with the infotainment system. First things first, the Nexon EV comes loaded with a wider 10.25″ display. Touch response and brightness are decent. It’s not too dull during the day and not too bright during the night. The display dims once the headlamps are turned on.
Now, let’s talk about the features of the infotainment system, it supports wireless Android Auto and Apple carplay. It has an astonishing arcade EV app which you can use to play little games while in ideal condition. Also, it wouldn’t let you get bored while sitting in the car. You can use almost every OTT app such as YouTube, PrimeVideo, Hotstar, etc to watch your favorite shows. This works only when the vehicle is in ideal condition i.e. parked safely.
You also get an air quality indicator which will also send a notification when the air quality reaches a dangerous level. You can also use this to share the live location of the vehicle with anyone. Also, if you wish to use your phone without Android auto/apple carplay then also you get options to control your phone like taking calls, dictating messages, etc.
Nexon EV 2024: Sound –
You get a 9-speaker setup of JBL with Nexon Ev 2024. 4 speakers, 4 tweeters, and 1 sub-woofer which is placed in the boot. The sound quality produced is perfectly tuned. It has a good base and treble. Even if you’re a music enthusiast you would feel the need to upgrade the speakers in the Nexon EV. You also get a lot of music modes such as Acoustic, Bass Enhancer, etc.
The most useful feature here is the mode called “Kid’s sleeping in the back”. It will mute all the rear speakers and the sound output will be delivered only through the speakers in front-row. This comes very handy as while traveling with family at night usually people in the rear-seat wish to sleep. But music helps the driver to stay awake. So you can use this music mode during such times.
Nexon EV 2024: Drive Quality –
As a Driver:
It would be a good choice if you wish to opt for Nexon EV as your daily drive. The driver’s comfort as a driver is above expectations. The steering feedback is great. Although the horn is a bit tricky at first but you’ll get used to it with time. The illuminating logo is not going to distract you as it dims out once the headlights are turned on.
The gear shifter was a problem in the previous version but with the 2024 version that issue is also resolved. Now, the gear shifter works smoother. The seats are also very comfortable even if planning a long trip. It is very easy to maneuver the car in traffic as the steering feedback is on point. You can also stretch the car to speeds up to 120 km/h, which the government allows, but you can stretch out a little if you wish. The car will not disappoint you there.
When and if you speed the car you want the car to be swift and agile, not to worry Tata has done a pretty good job here. Also, the braking bites are good. You’d have pretty good control of the car. Since it only comes with automatic transmission you will not have to worry about gear shifting in heavy traffic scenarios.
You’d notice paddle shifters in the vehicle but those are not for gear shifting. Those are there for regeneration mode. There are three levels of regeneration, first would allow the vehicle to move freely, and even if you move your feet away from the accelerator it would not apply brakes and there would be no regeneration of power. Third will apply the brakes immediately as soon as you remove your feet from the accelerator and start regenerating and recharging the battery.
There are a lot of controls on the steering wheels, all the buttons are illuminated which again is very convenient. The placement of the buttons is a bit too odd. While I drove the car the steering-mounted control buttons were pressed accidentally even when I didn’t want to use them. So this was a bit of an inconvenience for me. The wiper-washer and headlight knobs are placed a little too far from the steering wheel. If your hands are small then it’d be a little hard for you to reach them.
As a Passenger:
The first-row passenger seat is very comfortable, no complaints there. Suspensions also work great even in the potholes. You get a sunvisor with a vanity mirror and light. A hefty storage in the glove box to store some papers or anything is a bonus. You also get ventilated seats to beat this scorching heat.
But the second-row scenario is a bit messed up the inclination angle of the seat is very up-tight, making it uncomfortable for longer rides. You do not get sun-curtains. Also, there is no cabin light at the back. It would not be comfortable for three adults to sit in the second row. But it does its job for two people and short 100-150km rides.
You get AC vents and charging points on the rear side as well. Court hooks are there.
Nexon EV 2024: Verdict –
Nexon EV 2024 would be a great option as a daily drive. If you wish to just do up-down from work to home then it is going to be the best choice you can get. The running cost is very low. Even if you accelerate it badly and do not care about the range, then it would also run at a cost of around 1.5 Rs/Km. Just for example, activa runs at a cost of 4 Rs/Km.
So here you can sit in your car with the AC turned on ventilated seat and still save on the running cost. But all things aside you’d need to spend a lot more than activa at first, this was just an example. Long drives are not as comfortable in the car.
However, there are are few things to consider before buying the Nexon EV. First is the price, it is priced very aggressively as compared to the competition. Here you’d be spending around Rs 20 Lakh for the top-end variant but on the other hand XUV 400 is around 2.5 lakh cheaper. So, Tata should consider revising the price. Also, the service quality is a little less than stellar. That also needs improvement.
So my verdict would be if you have another car for outstation trips and want a second car for city rides and have a budget of around 20 Lakhs this could be a good option for you.
